550 GSM Hotel Towels — High Density for Hospitality

550 GSM 100% cotton hotel towels, built with 20/2 ring-spun yarn in warp and pile, 16/1 ring-spun in the weft, with a double-stitched hem. Constructively this line is identical to our base 500 GSM range, with one key difference — roughly 11% more yarn per square metre. This is the line for hotels that have decided what they want from quality but are looking for a touch more density than the market standard.

In practice we call 550 GSM the "quiet upgrade" — because it doesn't change the hotel's category, doesn't shout "luxury", doesn't require retuning the laundry. It simply delivers a tangibly denser feel in the guest's hand, in the zone where the bath linen quality is most often noticed.

Why +50 GSM make the difference

This is the question hoteliers comparing the two lines often ask. Honest answer: the difference is in loop density, not in the construction itself.

With the same yarn (20/2 in pile on both lines), raising GSM means more loops packed per square centimetre. The result:

  • •A fuller, "softer" surface to the touch — not because the yarn is softer, but because there's more of it on the same area.
  • •Greater absorbent area — more fibres means more capillary paths for water.
  • •Less "showing through" of the base under the pile — important for visual perfection after 100+ wash cycles, when economy towels start to expose their backing.

These are differences you feel but don't have to advertise. The 550 line is not a "premium line" — it is a better version of the standard.

Which properties it suits

We recommend the 550 line for the same market segment as 500 GSM, but with emphasis on properties where:

  • •The hotelier feels 500 GSM "isn't enough" for their guest — often during an upgrade from 3 to 4 stars, or when repositioning pricing.
  • •There is elevated seasonal competition — resort and city properties where the small difference in bath linen quality can show up in reviews and repeat bookings.
  • •Marketing emphasises "quality of detail" — properties where bed and bath linen is mentioned in descriptions or appears in social-media imagery.
  • •Guests stay longer — at stays of 4–5 days and above, the same towel is washed more times and density has a direct effect on perception.

For hotels still establishing their standard, we usually recommend the 500 GSM line. For hotels that already know what works and want a little extra value within the same operational logic, the 550 line is the better choice.

Construction — same; density — higher

Here it's important to be technically precise. The 550 line uses the same yarns as 500 GSM:

  • •20/2 ring-spun warp — two-ply, balanced, with the same laundering resilience.
  • •20/2 ring-spun pile — the same two-ply construction we covered on the 500 line.
  • •16/1 ring-spun weft — the same standard.
  • •Double-stitched hem — the same fray resistance.

The difference is entirely in the amount of yarn per square metre. This matters practically — the wash regime, temperature, dryer time and energy cost are almost identical to those of 500 GSM. You don't introduce new laundry logic, you don't retrain staff, you don't change cycles. You simply get a denser towel at the end of the process.

Care and longevity

Washing and drying at 60°C — the same EU sanitary standards. Dryer time is about 8–10% longer than 500 GSM (more yarn to dry), but doesn't reach the load of 600+ GSM towels.

Under correct treatment, 550 GSM terry towels keep a premium appearance for 240 to 280 cycles — about 20 cycles more than 500 GSM, thanks to the larger yarn reserve in the loops before visible thinning sets in.

Maintenance recommendations are identical to the 500 line: no fabric softener, no coarse fabrics in the same drum, no overloading, enzymatic and oxygen-based bleach instead of chlorine.

Colour and finish

The standard execution is Optical white — the same universal hotel standard. On request we produce other colours for design-led projects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real difference between 500 GSM and 550 GSM that the guest will feel?

The guest feels two things: a slightly fuller towel in the hand when picking it up, and a denser, more "substantial" surface against the skin. It's not a "wow" difference — it's a consistently better feel through the use cycle.

Does the premium over 500 GSM make economic sense?

At higher price levels (room above €120–150 per night), yes. The premium over 500 GSM is small as a percentage of purchase price, while the effect on quality perception is disproportionately larger. At properties with a lower price point, 500 GSM remains the more sensible choice.

Do you recommend mixed usage — 500 for standard rooms, 550 for better rooms?

This is a fully workable strategy and we see it often in practice. Both lines wash and dry on almost identical regimes, so mixed usage introduces no operational complexity. We only recommend clear labelling — by tag colour or border, for example.

What's the difference with the premium 700+ GSM line?

The 550 line stays in the standard operational class — same regime, same washer, same dryer time. Lines above 600 GSM enter the SPA/premium class with a different care regime, longer dryer time and more careful handling.
